By  Marty L.

Whether you're just starting out in the SEO game, or you've been in the battle trenches for quite some time now, there's absolutely no doubt that search engine optimization plays an important role in building your website.  The vast majority of us are not able to immediately rank on the first page of Google. This is why it's so important to learn how to search for low competition keywords. And what better way to do that than with a low competition keywords finder?

What you learn:
  • You'll learn what low competition keywords really are

  • I will teach you how to search for low competition keywords with several tools both paid and free

The search engines want you to succeed in SEO.

Google even put out a 200-point checklist on the best practices for search engine optimization.   But who the hell has the time to go through that for every single blog post or web page they put out?

I know I don't have that kind of time.

The best way to increase your SERPs (search engine ranking page) ranking is the slow and steady way:

By targeting low competition keywords first and then slowly building your way up to more competitive search terms.

What Are Low Competition Keywords?

Low competition keywords are search terms that have a decent monthly search volume (between 500 and 2,500 searches) with relatively low competition.  Keyword difficulty is also a contributing factor.

I should also point out that the terms ‘keyword competition’ and the ‘keyword difficulty’ are technically two different terms.

The term ‘keyword competition’ is more used in search engine marketing PPC campaigns while the term ‘keyword difficulty’ is more for people who are targeting organic search terms.

Over the years the two terms have blended together and have become interchangeable.

With the right guidance and a little bit of Hustle, tarpeting good keywords with a decent monthly search volume, that are also low competition, will surely bring you success in your SEO endeavors.

How to find low competition keywords with SEMrush

SEMrush is probably one of the most comprehensive SEO tools out there.

Perhaps the easiest way to find low competition keywords is to check your competitor's websites.  Chances are they are already ranking for keywords that you haven't even targeted.

It's a great way to get an idea of what search terms you should target.

To find the keywords your competitors are using, go to SEMrush → Organic Research → Positions.

After this the first step, you will want to use the filters to find the Search terms that are most relevant to your website.

Don't forget to export your list.

You can even compare multiple domains from your competitors and get unique keywords. Was just a few clicks you can get as much as 50,000 keywords.

Once you have your keyword list and you can expand on it by searching for match phrase keywords. This is a useful way to try to find Search terms that you may have otherwise overlooked.

To find phrase match keywords, go to SEMrush → Keyword Research → Full Search and enter a term from your initial list of Search terms and then hit enter and watch the magic happen.

You can also find related keywords by using the related keywords report tool.

Try to keep in mind the monthly search volume when doing this in SEMrush.  Try to keep the fridge volumes between 500 and 2500 searches per month.

With the right planning, you don't necessarily need to pay for the use of services.  In fact, you can get everything you need for free with a 7-Day pass that I have just for you.

Finding Long Tail Keywords With Low Seo Difficulty With KWfinder

This particular SEO tool is my personal favorite and the one I use on a regular basis.  I think it has an ease-of-use that other search tools simply don't have. It makes finding long tail keywords fairly easy for me.

In this example, we're going to use the search term ‘homemade coffee’.

KWfinder long tail keyword research

Once you enter in your search term and hit the find keywords button then you'll be met with a screen that looks like this.

Click the column labeled under search so that you can organize the Search terms in a descending format by search volume.

As you can see, a lot of these Search terms are fairly competitive.  We don't necessarily want that.

So let's go to the filter button and set the keyword difficulty to a maximum of 35.  This is The sweet spot in search term difficulty.

Doing it this way will give you an ideal combination of search volume and keyword difficulty, giving you an edge over your competitors.

In this example, we're going to use the search term how to make strong coffee. You can see in the image below that the search term has a keyword difficulty of 35 and just over 1,300 monthly searches.

For all intents and purposes, this is the perfect keyboard to target if you're writing about coffee.

Kwfinder also makes it very easy to find related Search terms.  You can make a list of related search terms based off of the original keyboard that you were targeting and make a fantastic blog post that ranks for multiple keywords.

I highly recommend this low competition keyword finder. I believe it is the absolute best, hands down.

The Best Free Keyword Research Tools You Can Use Today

If you're not currently ready to make a commitment to one of the paid Services I showcased above then you still have nothing to fear.

There are plenty of free keyword research tools that you can use today and I have them listed here for you.

I spent about two weeks researching all of the free keyword research tools out there (okay, maybe not all of them) and these are the services that I considered to be the best of the best.

Google AdWords: Keyword Planner

You may not be looking for keywords to place ads on the Google search engine but that doesn't mean that this tool isn’t incredibly powerful.

You're essentially getting your data straight from the source with this method.

For this example, I chose the search term ‘vegan dog food’.

What I love about the Google Keyword Planner is that they help you and make it easy for you to broaden your search and get even more keywords.

You can see below the keyword ideas and their rough estimate of their monthly search volumes as well as the competition.

Ubersuggest is a little competition keyword finder and much more. It was purchased by Neil Patel and he has offered the platform for free used.

This is a fantastic tool to use if you need good keyword ideas and also want to fill her out the keyword difficulty.

Out of all the free keyword research tools I've listed in this blog post, Ubersuggest is my favorite to buy far.

Sticking with our search term ‘vegan dog food’, I entered it into four suggest and this is what popped up.

You can see that the search term has an average monthly volume of 5400 and an SEO difficulty of 45.

Since an SEO difficulty of 45 is a little bit high for what we're trying to accomplish here, we want to go off of the search term and see if we can find anything with the lower difficulty score.

If we scroll down a little bit we can see the suggested keywords and keyboard ideas.  Left click on the arrow to the right of the search term ‘vegan dog food’.

After clicking on the Arrow to get more cute ideas we are met with a page that looks like this:

Click on the filter settings and set the maximum keyword difficulty to 35.

With the example above you will be armed with fantastic keywords that you can use to create a super valuable blog post about vegan dog food and you might even have a decent chance on ranking on the first page within a fairly short amount of time.

Google Correlate

Google correlate is an awesome tool and I often feel that it gets overlooked by a lot of digital marketers.

The great thing about Google correlate is that it lets you see which keywords get searched together.  That alone is what makes this incredibly powerful.

Keyword In

Keyword in is another great tool you can use for absolutely free to get the best keyword ideas.  With this service, you will already need to have a keyword in mind and then you would break it up in the columns as you'll see below.

The real magic happens when you hit the generate button.

It doesn't always produce top-notch Search terms but you can see how powerful this can be if you would just play around with it a little bit.

You're bound to find a few golden nuggets if you put in the work and dug in deep enough.

This particular keyword research tool is probably the most fun to use.

If you've ever used the regular Google search engine to find keywords or blog topics to write about then you will love what Soolve will offer.

For this example, I was going to use the search term at baby pajamas but I couldn't get a good enough screenshot because this does auto-suggest just like the Google search engine does.

What's great about this is that in that only uses the auto-suggest terms that you would see in the Google search bar, but also those of YouTube, Bing, Yahoo, and others that you can see an image I provided above.

It's a bit messy looking but it provides you with a lot of value.  Use Soolve to experiment with a variety of keywords.

Wordstream Free Keyword Tool

The free keyword tool from Wordstream only allows you to do 30 stitches before you have to pay, but if you combine this software with the other tools that I've mentioned so far, that is more than enough.

Although you are fairly Limited in what you can see with the keyword research tool from Wordstream, it's still can help with giving you an idea of what other keywords are related to the one you were targeting.

Although there are many free keyword research tools and look competition Key Word Finders you can use out there the ones I listed in this article are services that I have personally used over the years.

What is your favorite keyword research tool? Leave a comment below and let everyone know.
